What is a NAICS code?
A six-digit industry classification used by US, Canadian, and Mexican government agencies to categorize every business in North America.
NAICS, North American Industry Classification System, replaced the older SIC system in 1997 for federal statistical reporting. The codes are six digits, drilling from sector (first two digits) down to specific industry (last two): 541512 is "Computer Systems Design Services," nested under 5415 (Computer Systems Design and Related Services), under 541 (Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services).
NAICS codes show up everywhere downstream: SBA loan eligibility, federal contracting set-asides, government statistics, B2B prospecting filters, KYB compliance flags, B2B insurance underwriting. Any system that needs to slice the economy by what businesses actually do tends to use NAICS as the canonical taxonomy.
Brand.dev returns NAICS codes for any company by domain, useful for B2B sales targeting (filter prospects by industry), CRM enrichment (auto-tag accounts), compliance (KYB pre-checks), and government contractor work (SAM.gov set-asides).

FAQ
NAICS vs SIC code?
NAICS replaced SIC for US federal statistics in 1997. SEC EDGAR still uses SIC for filings. Most modern B2B systems use NAICS; historical and finance datasets often have both.
How often are NAICS codes updated?
Every five years. The 2022 edition is current as of 2026; the next revision is due in 2027.
Can a company have multiple NAICS codes?
Yes. Diversified businesses register multiple codes, with one designated as primary. Government contractors must list all relevant codes in SAM.gov.
