Your user agent

  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/156.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

    Chrome 156 on Windows

Rotating user agents only changes one header. For sites that fingerprint your browser, use the web scraping API →

How do I generate a random user agent?

  1. Pick a browser, an operating system, and a device type, or leave each on All.
  2. Choose how many user agents you want, from 1 to 20. Each one in a list is different.
  3. Click Generate random user agent. The list refreshes each time you click or change a filter.
  4. Copy one string with its copy button, or use Copy all or TXT to take the whole batch.

What is a user agent string?

The user agent header identifies the client to the server. Sites use it to serve a mobile or desktop layout, to count browser versions, and to decide whether a request comes from a person or a crawler. Crawlers such as Googlebot announce themselves in it, which is also how robots.txt rules are matched to a bot.

When does rotating user agents help a web scraper?

Rotation helps when a site rate-limits or flags one repeated string, or when you want to test how a page responds to different browsers and devices. It also helps to avoid the default python-requests or curl user agent, which many sites reject outright.

What are the limits of user agent rotation?

The user agent is easy to fake, so anti-bot systems compare it with signals that are harder to fake: the TLS handshake, HTTP/2 settings, header order, canvas and font fingerprints, and mouse and timing behavior. If those disagree with the user agent you send, the request is more suspicious, not less.

A web scraping API removes the guesswork. JavaScript rendering, anti-bot bypass, and proxies are included in every scrape, so you do not maintain a user agent pool yourself.

What can you use a random user agent for?

  • Testing how your site renders for different browsers and devices
  • Setting the header in a script, a curl command, or an HTTP client
  • Configuring a headless browser context for Playwright or Puppeteer
  • Checking whether a site serves different content to mobile and desktop clients
  • Building a pool of realistic strings for a request rotation list

Frequently asked questions

Is the random user agent generator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and has no daily limit.
Are these user agent strings real?
Yes. Each string follows the format its browser sends today and uses a recent stable version number. The list was checked against each vendor's release data on October 9, 2026. Chrome and Edge on Android send a fixed, reduced device token, and Safari on iOS keeps a frozen OS version, so those parts look the same on real devices.
Does a random user agent stop a website from blocking my scraper?
Rarely on its own. A user agent is one header. Sites that block scrapers also look at the TLS fingerprint, the IP address, header order, JavaScript execution, and behavior. A realistic user agent removes the most obvious signal, but it does not make an HTTP library look like a browser.
Should I rotate user agents when I scrape?
Only when you also keep the rest of the request consistent with it. A Chrome on Windows user agent paired with Linux-only fonts, a Python TLS fingerprint, or mismatched client hints is easier to flag than a single honest user agent. Rotating helps most when you spread many requests across IPs and sessions.
What does a user agent string look like?
It starts with Mozilla/5.0 for historical reasons, then lists the platform in parentheses, the rendering engine, and the browser name with its version. Chrome on Windows, for example, sends Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/156.0.0.0 Safari/537.36.
How do I set a user agent in my scraper?
Send it as the User-Agent request header. In a headless browser, set it on the browser context. With the Context.dev web scraping API you do not need to manage it: JavaScript rendering, anti-bot bypass, and proxies are included in the 1-credit scrape.
